CANDY BOWL CRUNCH

A bowl of candy is like a pot of gold (I know, wrong holiday). Whenever you see a bowl of candy especially around Halloween, there is this sort of glow about it. Heavily regarded and often demolished in no time. Now shift gears to a snack mix. They are a dime a dozen and usually involve some salty and sweet components that are also demolished one handful at a time.

Shift back to Halloween (two hops this time). I wanted to get a Halloween snack mix together that was both addicting and nostalgic. A perfect addition to a Halloween party, movie night or passed around a campfire. I thought about the snack mix I had as a kid. Known to many as Muddy Buddies or Puppy Chow. Chocolate covered cereal tossed in powdered sugar. Who created this and why don’t they have a Nobel Peace Prize?

This following recipe is a great mix of the classic Muddy Buddy and the simple delights of a Halloween candy bowl. Feel free to get creative with your own and add and subtract parts as necessary. There are no wrong answers here. Live your best Halloween life.

BEWARE: This is a messy project so….enjoy it! But do have a good kitchen cleaning product nearby. Before you begin, here are some headaches to avoid.

Too much on the left and too little on the right.

Lastly I used coating chocolate from Michael’s. They had black, purple, green and orange that happened to be PUMPKIN SPICE! It was a good day. Click each color to see exactly what I used.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups Chex cereal

  • 2 cups Peanut butter filled pretzels

  • 2 cups Pumpkin spice/orange coating chocolate

  • 1 cups Black coating chocolate

  • 2 cups Powdered sugar

  • 1/2 cup Reese’s Pieces

  • 1 cup Chopped Kit Kats or Pumpkin Pie Kit Kats

Directions

  • Place 1/3 cup of powdered sugar in a Zip-Loc bag or brown paper bag. Have multiple bags setup.
  • Melt the pumpkin spice or orange coating chocolate in the microwave based on the instructions. Stir frequently to help the melting process.
  • Once melted, immediately mix in the Chex cereal (1 cup of cereal per 1/2 cup of melts). Gently toss/stir with a rubber spatula to fully coat.
  • Transfer the cereal to the bag with powdered sugar and shake gently to coat with powdered sugar. Carefully work the cereal to separate.
  • Pour the now coated cereal into a fine mesh strainer and shake off as much of the excess sugar.
  • Pour the cereal on to a lined baking sheet and let it dry out for 30-40 minutes. Pull apart any cereal pieces still stuck together.
  • Repeat the same process with the black coating chocolate and peanut butter filled pretzels.
  • Once the cereal and pretzels have fully dried, mix together in a large bowl. Add in the chopped Kit Kats and Reese’s Pieces.
