Getting through these dark and dank months of winter all while waiting for days of Halloween magic can be tough. Sometimes you need to create your own. Now I realize, you could buy Halloween sprinkles from Amazon. In fact, I’ll put a link here if you just want to buy them. However, there’s something to be said for making your own that ALSO taste way better than the flavorless candle wax versions (no offense if you like those).
This a quick (kind of) and fun activity to knock out in between scary movies during the weekend or with your kids. A couple of pantry ingredients mixed with deep Halloween colors and you have the perfect accessory to Halloweenify your winter desserts from ice cream to cookies to that other odd dessert from Pinterest you’ve been dying to try.
WHATCHA NEED:
- 1 ½ cups of powdered sugar (sifted)
- 1 tablespoon of cornstarch
- 1 ½ tablespoons of water
- 1 tablespoon of corn syrup
- ½ teaspoon of vanilla
- Gel colors (look for electric colors) [Orange, Purple, Green, Black]
Let’s make some sprinkles!
- Stir together 1 cup powdered sugar, cornstarch, water, corn syrup and vanilla extract until well-combined. This will require some elbow grease.
- Throw in the remaining ½ cup powdered sugar.
- Add food coloring and stir until well-combined and desired color is reached. INSIDER TIP: Using the electric colors will eliminate having to use to much food coloring which the more you add, the more you will taste it.
- Take your mixture and transfer to a piping bag (or zip loc bag with the corner snipped off) with a small tip.
- Grab some cookie sheets and line them with parchment paper. Pipe long, sprinkle-width horizontal lines across the paper.
- Leave these out in the open to dry for a minimum of 12 hours (this is the part that isn’t so quick)
- Once fully dried, you can slide them off the parchment and take a knife to these lines and chop your sprinkles to the size or sizes you prefer.
You can store these in an airtight container for some time, but if you’re like me, they won’t last that long!
